What A Bust!
Commodore B. J. Turk, 13 July 2003

It was a real disappointment.

On the official Opening Day for the Acme Yacht Club, we threw a party and nobody came.

Of course, that might be because there aren't any members, because I haven't built that module yet. Or maybe it was because it wasn't publicized in advance, which it wasn't. Or maybe it was because I didn't show up myself, which I didn't.

I didn't even know where it was, or anything. And I'm the only official member.

So much for my organizational skills.

I've been working off and on to get the database back end for the site set up. It's a lot of work, but I'm convinced that it will be worth it. I could have just gone with some canned content management system, such as phpNuke or postNuke, but that was just too common, and it wouldn't fit in with the site very well. Besides, I tried really hard for a long time and it still didn't work, so I gave up.

They say that if you want something done right, then you have to do it yourself. Of course, I don't think anyone was thinking about people like the members of the Acme Yacht Club when that was said. We didn't become sailors of misfortune because we did something right ourselves, you know.

Anyway, I'm still pounding away at the various and sundry modules that will be part of the club site, and true to form, lots of things are going wrong. This is one of my many qualifications for being in this position. I'm trying not to break anything as I go, and having no better than mixed success, but by the end of summer, the site should be completely up and running, though not necessarily running well.

God willing...
