Back On Track
Commodore B. J. Turk, 13 October 2003

Okay, now we're getting somewhere...

The issues regarding the new server have been resolved, and so now things have been moving along pretty well in building the member module. Right now, the pages for all of you potential members to join are being developed and are moving along nicely, and I've had relatively few problems with the database so far. You're probably as surprised about this as I am.

As things stand, the member module, which includes everything from joining to the member profile pages, should be done by the end of October. That will be cool. I'm expecting to get at least part of the stores up by then as well (so you can buy a boat!), since that should be somewhat simpler, and frankly, the forum project is beginning to scare me as it gets closer. Once the member module and stores are complete, then development will begin on the forums, unless I've turned into a quivering bowl of gelatin by then, which is certainly possible.

Truthfully, the forums might not be as challlenging as I've feared all along because of the experience that I'm gaining in building the member module, but it will be daunting nonetheless. After all, I have to build the forums as well as all of the necessary administrative functions, which is no small thing. Adding to the complexity is the necessity for a modicum of security to prevent the bad guys from messing things up for all of us.

Of course, I've got the prepare a lot of other member-service things in parallel with the forums, so there is no small amount of work left to do. It is my hope that, in the end, the Acme Yacht Club site will be among the best yacht club sites on the web. If it isn't, well, that really shouldn't surprise anybody. As usual, I will continue to keep you posted as to what's new with the club.

Stick around and see what's happening. It's slower going than I expected, but at least it's working, more or less, the way I had planned all along. It's nice when things work out. Isn't it?
