Signal Right, Turn Left
Commodore B. J. Turk, 13 November 2003
Well, I thought that I would have the member and store modules done by now, but that obviously hasn't worked out quite how I'd hoped. Imagine that. I have actually done far less over the past month in getting the member module done than I have in getting the stores up, which I hadn't even started this time last month.
If you're thinking that I should manage the project better, then you're right. I know that. Thanks so much for pointing that out.
It's not as if I haven't had time to take care of the member module first, it's just that there was something about the stores that seemed to call to me, and I heeded the call. Unfortunately, this came at the expense of the member module, which should never have been the case. I screwed up, I admit. It's not as if you've lost out on anything that you had before, so lighten up, pal.
As it stands right now, I would place the member module at about 30% complete, while the stores are about 80% complete. I think that only reasonable thing to do at this point is to finish off the damned stores once and for all, then get serious about the member module. Once the stores are up, you'll be able to actually buy a boat from this site, courtesy of our Official Boat Supplier, A Sailing Obsession in Visalia, California. It's a real, brick-and-mortar sailboat dealer, and the boats being offered are not only inexpensive and easy to sail, but you can have one delivered to your door anywhere in the continental United States at no extra charge. How's that for a benefit for all?
I'm really disappointed that I haven't got as much done as I wanted to, particularly since an Acme Yacht Club membership would make an excellent Christmas gift, and it looks like I will miss most of the Christmas shopping season before I can roll out the member module. I try to look at it this way: if it came out on time, and there were no problems, and everything went just as planned, and everyhting worked exactly the way it was supposed to every time, and everyone was happy, this wouldn't be the Acme Yacht Club, and I wouldn't be involved.
It stands to reason that the Club should be founded not only by a Sailor of Misfortune, but a programmer of misfortune too. That's what I am, and that's who is building the club from the keel up. I AM making progress, even if not all of it is obvious to the casual observer. There is quite a lot of back-end code that I've been writing that is critical to the function of the site, and it's worth investing the time now, before the site gets too big to change with any ease. I will get things where they need to be, and working the way they need to be, and all will be well.
Eventually. Just don't ask me when.
