1st Friday the 13th Status Report
Commodore B. J. Turk, 13 February 2004
Well, another Friday the 13th has come, so it's time to take a look at how far we have come since the last one. Since that day was the day of the club's founding, quite a lot has happened. The club site went active, albeit with limited functionality. The club's site moved to its own server and began operating under its own domain name. The necessary functionality was built to permit the relatively-easy posting of these messages. The Club's Stores went live, and began the process of selling Snark sailboats for a California dealer.
It may not seem like all that much, but having to hold down a full-time job while building this club and this site by myself makes things go slowly. Indeed, if everything developed quickly and worked well the first time out, then that would just show that I'm not really qualified to build such a club in the first place. After all, errors make this club what it is, if not makes the members (and yours truly, the club's founder) what they are.
By the next Friday the 13th, which is in August, I hope to have more work done on the member module. It would be nice to be able to have other members eventually. What is holding most things back is the PayPal IPN functionality. I haven't been able to get it worked out, and I haven't yet been able to test it well either. Since IPN is key not only to the member module, but the stores at well, I have to get it nailed before I can effectively implement the member module.
Also on deck is the elections module, which will enable the members to elect their own officers so I don't have to stay in this role indefinitely. That really isn't a big deal, since the officers won't have any significant duties, but it would be nice nonetheless. I'm sure that someone will want one day to be able to say that he or she is the commodore of this yacht club. Once the member and stores modules are done, building this module should be fairly easy. I hope so, anyway.
Truthfully, I expected to have more done by now, but I'm not disappointed with my progress. Things that have been built up to now are working pretty much the way they are supposed to, which is a good thing. This is, after all, a built-from-the-ground-up-from-scratch kind of site, so the fact that any of it works at all is pretty amazing, when you think about it. Just imagine how much better it will be in August.
Of course, it will be pretty much the same unless I get more stuff done...
