First Anniversary Message
Commodore B. J. Turk, 13 June 2004

One year ago today, the Acme Yacht Club was founded as a club for those who are neither wealthy enough nor skilled enough to be accepted in traditional yacht clubs. Those who are unwealthy, unskilled, or just plain unlucky tend not to be so welcome among the usual yacht clubs. By contrast, this club was designed not only to appeal to such people, but to celebrate them.

To be a member of this club, you don't have to be rich. You don't have to be a good sailor. You don't have to own a boat. And if you do own a boat, you don't have to own a big one. You can be yourself, and that's good enough. Everyone is acceptable, and all are accepted (as long as your dues are paid).

Unfortunately, even after a year, the club site is not yet ready to sign up members. Because this is a part-time effort for me, I simply haven't been able to devote the necessary time to getting everything working the way that they should. Some things have worked fairly well, and other things have been failures of spectacular magnitude. Most have fallen somewhere between these two extremes, though leaning toward the failure end. This is, of course, entirely in keeping with the spirit of the club.

What has been accomplished since founding is that the club site is on its own server, the necessary code for posting these messages finally works more or less exactly the way it's supposed to, and development on the member module (with the ability for people to actually join the club) is proceeding as well as can be expected. Testing on elements of the member module is continuing, even though it is not going well so far. Diligence in the face of adversity is also in keeping with the spirit of the club, so I persevere.

I continue to second-guess myself with regard to the forum module. I could go ahead with the Invision Power Board (IPB) that is installed with the server, but it is lacking a few things that I want, such as interoperability with the member module and integration in look and feel with the club site. My preference would be to use club membership to control what areas would be available for viewing and posting. The IPB can't do that as coded, and the code itself is confusing enough to make it difficult for me to give it the interoperability I want it to have. I don't really want to have to build the forums from scratch, but I may have to compromise to get some of what I want without having to do it all.

With any luck, next month may have me announcing the completion of the member module and the ability of the club to finally sign up members, but don't hold your breath. Luck, unfortunately, is not in keeping with the spirit of the club.
