Commodore B. J. Turk, 13 September 2004

This has been a lousy month. First, I suddenly discovered that something I did broke the link to the stores. This was not a really big deal since there have been few visitors to the club store so far, but it was certainly annoying. I have no idea how long the link was broken in the top menu, but I did manage to fix it.

Do you know the old saying that if it isn't broken, don't fix it? Well, true to form, I ignored that sage advice by trying to condense the code for the stores. As a result, I broke the code completely, and it took me quite a while to figure out where I screwed up. I did find it, obviously, but it was just another one of those things. I would have just rolled the code back to the previous version, but, as you probably guessed, I didn't back up the original code first.

You may be wondering why I was messing with that code, that was already done and working, when the member module wasn't finished yet. The answer is that I wanted to test the new code, and it seemed like an okay idea at the time. The code actually arose from my development on the member module, and it made sense to use it in other modules where appropriate. It's easier to do that kind of thing early in development rather than try to plug it into a fully-developed site. If I'd waited and broke something down the line when there are lots of members, it would make a lot more people unhappy. As things stand now, I'm the only one who was particularly unhappy with the turn of events.

Anyway, I am back to plugging away on the member module, which has had some delightful failures in testing. You might say that it's been a little like last month, only I'm a month older, as are you. What's causing me problems is the PayPal interface, and making sure the site will work with PayPal's shopping cart once I implement that. At least that will be easy to do, but I have to make sure that the database can handle cart orders, and it isn't able to do that yet.

Don't lose hope. You really do belong here, and it's only a matter of time before you can join. As a teaser of sorts, I can tell you right now that membership dues for those who choose to pay monthly will be less than US$5, life memberships (pay once, and be a member for life) will be available in limited quantities at an initial price of less than $200, and initiation fees will be fixed at US$20 for the first year of membership availability.

So keep your credit cards at the ready, pray for me, and wear your PFDs!
