Holiday Greetings!
Commodore B. J. Turk, 13 December 2004
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah (I hope that I spelled that right) or Kwanzaa, happy holidays! It's a season of joy and goodwill toward men, particularly those who sail. Here at the club, we're stringing the lights from bow to stern, illuminating the water as well as the sky.
Well, sort of.
Okay, there's fake garland, and a plastic tree with one short string of lights (see how they twinkle!), but the spirit's there. All the best to you and yours this joyous season.
Then again, how joyous can it be when you can't sail? Almost half of the world is now experiencing conditions in which no sailor in his right mind would sail, but that doesn't stop us! One cannot be a sailor of misfortune without courting misfortune itself, after all. If you're braving the elements, make sure that you wear your PFD, or you'll get no presents, except maybe a nice box in which to spend eternity. That wouldn't be good.
And if you're feeling a little smarter and taking the season off, double-check that your boat is secure and that it won't be adversely affected by the weather. It doesn't take much water, fresh or salt, to wreak havoc on electronics (like radios, for example) and sails, so make sure that you've battened down the hatches, as it were. Boats are best wet on the outside, and not on the inside.
As I mentioned before, the club will miss yet another holiday shopping season. So it goes. As the new year approaches, your humble commodore is creating a list of resolutions to which I expect to adhere until at least January 4, among them being a rededication to getting the member module completed by getting the PayPal interface working. I'm not putting a time limit on it or anything, and nobody's ever bothered to ask when it will get done, so I don't imagine that there's a ton of interest out there.
Then again, membership may just explode once people can actually become members, so I'll just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure: I won't find out until I get the member module done! I will! I will! I will!
I hope...
